A Look Back at 2013: Recent Happenings at Ankh Antiquarian Books

Over more than a decade ago, we had a wonderful time at the Wilson Hall Book Fair at Melbourne University.

It was a special event, not just for the book trade, but because my 13-year-old daughter, Laura, joined me at the stall, getting some of her first hands-on experience in bookselling. That fair also sparked a growing passion for Rare Latin books and maps, leading to some incredible finds over the coming years.

Looking back now, it’s amazing to see how far we’ve come, with Laura now playing a key role in Ankh.

2013 Melbourne Rare Book Fair at Wilson Hall

Dear Friends, it’s time for a little catch-up on what’s been happening at Ankh Antiquarian Books.

I wanted to share some highlights from the past year.

In July, we had a fantastic time at Wilson Hall, Melbourne University. Trade was steady, and to my surprise, I even sold some non-Egyptology books! My 13-year-old daughter, Laura, joined me at the stall, learning the trade firsthand. It was a joy to have her involved. While at the fair, I picked up some fascinating books on Cyprus and an Easter Island book signed by one of the Churchills (not Winston!). The signature was an unexpected bonus after I had already fallen in love with the book.

A Growing Passion for Early Books & Maps

Over the past year, my interest in antiquarian books and maps has grown even more. I’ve acquired some remarkable Egyptology books from the early to mid-1800s, as well as 1700s maps of Egypt and Africa. One of the most unique finds was a 1779 Dutch map of Botany Bay and a memorial for the death of Captain Cook—irresistible additions to my collection.

Among my favorite purchases this year is a 1723 book titled The Way to the Temple of True Honor and Fame by the Paths of Heroic Virtue, in beautiful condition with a marbled cover. Other highlights include a Gaelic Bible from 1826 and a large set of Rollin’s Egyptians and Carthaginians.

Looking Ahead
