A Guide to Wax Seals & Nib Pen Writing

Adding a wax seal or a nibbed pen to your letters is a timeless and elegant touch, perfect for wedding invitations, special event stationery, and personal correspondence.

However, if you’re new to wax sealing, getting started can be tricky.

Here’s a simple guide to help you master the art of wax seals and nib pen writing.

How to Create a Wax Seal

Follow these steps to achieve a perfect wax seal:

1. Melt the Wax – Use a candle to melt the wax and pour it where you want the seal, about the size of a 10-cent coin.

2. Prepare the Seal – Dampen the seal with a sponge and press it into the wax. If the wax sticks to the seal, it’s either too hot or the seal isn’t cool enough.

3. Let It Set – Allow the wax to cool and harden. Once done, your letter will have a beautiful, authentic finish.

The traditional sealing wax available at Ankh Antiquarian Books is brittle when dry, making it unsuitable for mailing unless placed inside another envelope.

Fun Fact:

Wax seals are still used in the legal world alongside red tape for sealing important documents.

Writing with a Nib Pen

Writing with a nib pen requires patience and practice, but the result is a beautiful, flowing script that enhances the charm of any handwritten note.

Steps to Write with a Nib Pen:

1. Prepare Your Ink – Open your ink well.

2. Dip the Nib – Submerge the nib halfway into the ink, then wipe off the excess at the side of the ink well.

3. Write Smoothly – Use gentle, fluid strokes for the best cursive style.

When the ink runs out, dip again and continue writing.

With practice, you’ll develop a natural rhythm, allowing you to create elegant letters, place cards, poetry, and more.
